It is a very exciting time to be in education right now in the United States. In July of 2010, California adopted the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. This means that students in all of the states that are on-board (all but 4 or 5 in the nation) will be assessed on the same set of standards. This will be challenging because in many ways these new content and practice standards are more rigorous than those we have used for the last ten or so years. These Common Core standards were developed using college and university expectations, international benchmarks, and experts in the field of mathematics.
So how will this shift impact your child? I will be asking my students to do a lot more independent thinking as I serve more as a facilitator as opposed to the "deliverer of information". I will encourage your child to think for themselves in a way that they are maybe not accustomed to, expect them to justify their process in an articulate way, and work together in a collaborative and respectful way with their peers.
We are all learning together and I am far from being an expert in this craft. However, I do ask that you are supportive of these shifts and help your child (and me) as we take on this challenge together. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
